Sustainability

Øyfjellet Wind Park started as a local initiative, with broad support from the local population and among local decision-makers. Øyfjellet Wind Park is now a significant wind power producer, supplying local Norwegian industry with renewable energy.

Norway has committed to achieving ambitious climate targets: reducing emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this, there is a great need for more renewable energy. Projects such as Øyfjellet Wind Park are crucial for reaching Norway's climate goals.

Øyfjellet Wind Park creates significant value for the local community, expected to generate over NOK 80 million annually through property tax, income tax, land rental, local contracts, sponsorships and more.

Øyfjellet has committed to

Ripple effects for Alcoa

In addition to the direct benefits for the local community, the wind farm has significant ripple effects by supplying Alcoa with renewable energy at a competitive price.

Alcoa is a cornerstone company employing 650 people with an annual capacity of 180,000 tonnes of aluminium. A 15-year fixed-price contract (PPA) has been entered into with the aluminium smelter in Mosjøen – particularly important when energy prices are high.

The clean electricity from Øyfjellet covers more than a third of Alcoa's annual consumption and facilitates the production of low-carbon aluminium.

The Transparency Act

For Øyfjellet Wind, sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and this is reflected in everything we do. Social sustainability is a prerequisite for sustainable operations.

Øyfjellet Wind is covered by the Transparency Act, which entered into force on 1 July 2022. This means Øyfjellet Wind conducts due diligence assessments on its impact on human rights and decent working conditions. These assessments are explained in an annual report, alongside a Code of Conduct for the company and a Code of Conduct for business partners.

Due diligence is a continuous process, and Øyfjellet's goal is real improvement in its own operations and supply chain.

What is wind power?

Put simply, wind power is the movement of air in the atmosphere that occurs when there is a difference in pressure between bodies of air, caused by gravity or the sun's warming of the Earth's surface.

Pressure differences are evened out as air circulates from high- to low-pressure areas. This movement contains stored energy – wind power – which can be captured by wind turbines such as those at Øyfjellet.

The turbines are high-technology products designed to generate the most power with the least possible impact on nature, providing a stable and inexhaustible energy source to help meet Norway's power needs and accelerate the transition to a low-emission society.
